The map that proved my whole theory about the phantom island was wrong

I spent years insisting that the island of Hy-Brasil on old maps was just a myth, then I found a 1674 chart with a note from a captain who claimed to have landed there in fog. Now I'm torn between thinking it's a hoax or maybe a confused iceberg sighting. Anyone else change their mind on one of these imaginary maps after finding some weird evidence?

Fog's a real jerk for making us look stupid.

Is it really that deep though? Like yeah the fog makes things harder than they need to be sometimes but that's kind of the point of it being there. I mean maybe I'm just too chill about it but I don't see it as making us look stupid, more just a pain in the neck.

Hold on, just a gentle nudge there. Fog doesn't have intentions or feelings to make you look stupid. It's just water vapor that happens to be in the air. I've seen plenty of maps with notes about fog banks and tricky currents, and they weren't about looking dumb, just noting real conditions for sailors. If that captain landed on something in the fog, he probably wasn't trying to trick anyone, he just couldn't see what he was walking on. Maybe he found a big chunk of floating ice or a weird rock formation that looked like an island when the mist cleared for a second.
