Had to pick between a beat-up silver age issue and a near-mint 90s variant

Has anyone else made a trade they instantly second-guessed?

The silver age issue beat up is probably worth more than the 90s variant in any condition. People get fooled by that whole "old must be better" thing but condition is king in this hobby. A beater silver age book with missing pages and tape on the spine isn't doing anyone any favors. I'd rather have a clean 90s book that actually presents nicely on a shelf than something that looks like it got dragged behind a car for thirty years. Unless you're talking about a major key like Hulk 181 or something where even a rough copy still has value. Most silver age books aren't keys though, they're just old and beaten up.

Genuine question - what makes a silver age book worth grabbing even beat up?
