I used to think collecting variant covers was the only way to be a real fan

A friend at my local shop in Milwaukee told me I was missing the actual stories by chasing every #1 issue variant. He said I spent over $200 last month on covers I never even read. Now I only buy the main cover and actually read the comics. Has anyone else shifted from collecting to reading?

Heard a podcast where they called variant collecting "wallpaper shopping." Makes you wonder why we buy stories we never even open, right?
