I was at a small con in Omaha last year and a guy in line for a signing said something that made me stop collecting variant covers.

Look at it as collecting art, not just buying the same story. Those covers are the only place a lot of artists get to really cut loose and show their style on big characters. The chase is the fun part, finding that rare one in the wild or trading with another collector. It turns a hobby into a community thing. If you only care about the words inside, just wait for the trade paperback. The singles market, and the variants, are what keep the monthly issues alive for the rest of us.

lol that Omaha story is rough, I feel that. But @the_phoenix I think what Joseph is getting at is bigger than just comics. It's the same thing with records, or even trading cards now. People collect the experience, not just the product. You see it at flea markets and garage sales, the thrill of the hunt is half the fun for a lot of folks. Yeah, it's a pain to move, but so is having a bunch of Funko pops or whatever, it's just part of the deal when you're into a hobby like that.

That Omaha con story must have been a real gut punch. I gave up on variant covers after my third move, when I had to box up hundreds of the same comic with slightly different art. The whole chase just started to feel like a chore invented by publishers to sell the same book five times. It’s way more fun to just buy the stories you actually want to read.
