My buddy Steve finally convinced me about variant covers
I used to think variant covers were a total waste of money. Why pay extra for a different drawing when the story is the same? But Steve handed me his copy of Batman #423 with the Bolland cover last month. I held it up and saw how the colors popped compared to the standard one. Now I get the appeal even if my wallet doesn't.

Oh man, I totally get the wallet not liking it thing. I picked up the Jim Lee variant of X-Men #1 back in the day and now I have a whole short box of covers I couldn't resist. It's like a sickness but with really pretty paper.

Honestly, you gotta set some ground rules before it gets out of hand. I told myself only one variant per book and only if I really love the art. No buying just because it might be worth something someday because that's a mug's game. Stick to artists you actually like not just hype covers. Also give yourself a monthly limit like 20 bucks or something. Once you blow through it you're done for the month. It keeps the collecting fun instead of feeling like a second mortgage.
