Overheard a guy at my local shop say something that changed how I read comics

I was at Cosmic Comics in Portland last Saturday and heard this older collector tell a kid that skipping the ads in an issue is like skipping the story. I always flipped past them without a second thought. But he said ads show you the era, the culture, what people cared about then. Now I actually look at them, and it makes me wonder what other stuff I've been missing. Has anyone else changed a habit like this?

Haha yeah "deep insights from toothpaste tubes" - but honestly that guy's onto something real. I started actually looking at the letter columns and back page ads in old comics I inherited from my uncle, and you can pretty much chart the whole 80s and 90s by what was being hawk. Those little text ads for x-ray glasses and sea monkeys tell you way more about what kids wanted back then than any wiki article. My trick is to pick a random issue from whatever year and look at the food ads first - you can see exactly when microwave dinners took over, or when everyone started obsessing over Mountain Dew. It's not life changing stuff but it makes the reading feel more like time travel.
