The moment I realized I was reading comics wrong for 15 years

Tbh I used to skim panels fast, like I was speed-reading a novel. I thought the art was just decoration and the words carried the story. Last Tuesday I picked up an old issue of Saga and actually sat with each panel. I noticed the background details, the character reactions, the way the artist froze a moment. It hit me that I was missing half the plot, maybe more. Turns out my buddy in Denver who collects variants always tried to tell me this, but I brushed him off. Now I feel like I owe every comic I've ever read a re-read. Has anyone else had that slow-down moment, or am I just late to the obvious?

...and here I thought I was the only one who treated panels like a flipbook race. Man, I spent a solid decade blazing through Watchmen like it was a text message thread, and then someone pointed out a background joke in a crowd scene I'd breezed past like five times. Turns out I was basically reading a comic book with my eyes closed and just trusting the captions to do all the heavy lifting. The first time I actually paused on a splash page, I felt like I'd been cheating at a test for years and just now noticed the answer key was sitting right there in the margins. It's honestly embarrassing how many times I've re-read the same issues just to catch what my 14-year-old brain skipped. Now I'm the guy who spends ten minutes on two pages and my coffee gets cold, so maybe we're all just late to the party together.
