Thought Alan Moore was overhyped till I read Watchmen in one sitting

I used to roll my eyes whenever someone called Watchmen the best comic ever. Figured it was just old fans being nostalgic. Then I grabbed a copy at a con in Austin for $15 and read it straight through on a Sunday. The way Moore built that world with no clear heroes and that ending hit me different. Any other skeptics get converted by a specific run or story you slept on?

Any other skeptics get converted" - man, that's exactly what happened to me with Moore. I remember thinking "okay, it's a superhero comic with a blue guy, how deep can it be?" And then I finished it and just sat there for like 20 minutes staring at the wall. If you haven't already, grab a copy of his Swamp Thing run next. It's more horror focused but that same layered storytelling is there, and it'll mess with your head in a good way. Just go in blind, don't read any summaries or spoilers. That's the best advice I can give.

Ok but is Watchmen really that deep though? I mean it's a comic where a blue guy turns into a giant squid at the end. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed it but people act like it's some profound philosophical text and I'm just not seeing it. The whole "who watches the watchmen" thing is cool but it's not exactly new. Did you ever read V for Vendetta? That one actually hit me harder. Maybe Watchmen just isn't my kind of serious, you know?
