Tried a new comic shop in Brooklyn and got schooled by a kid half my age

Last Saturday I went to this small place called Ninth Circle Comics off Bedford Ave. I was grabbing a random X-Men issue from the 90s and this kid maybe 12 years old walks up and starts telling me about the artist's whole story on that run. He knew more about Jim Lee's panel layouts than I ever did. Made me realize I just flip through back issues without really looking at the art. How do you guys actually study the art in comics instead of just reading the words?

Honestly, I gotta push back on this a little. I've been reading comics for 20 years and I think the words are just as important as the art. You can't separate them, they work together to tell the story. Yeah, that kid sounds impressive, but reading for the words doesn't make you wrong, it just means you're more into the writing side of things.

Might try learning one artist's whole run like that 12 year old did.
