An old sat diver told me my comms check was wrong and I still hear his voice

I was running a pre-dive topside in the Gulf near Port Fourchon about 2 years ago. This old timer grabs my arm and says 'son, you're saying the words but you ain't listening for the ring.' He meant I was just calling out checks without hearing the actual tone in the earpiece. Anyone else get a piece of advice that completely changed how you run a dive?

Hits different when you realize how many people are just going through the motions in everyday stuff too. Like ordering coffee without actually looking at the barista or nodding along in a meeting while your brain's somewhere else - we're all guilty of it sometimes but it's wild how much real connection we just skip past.

That thing about listening for the ring is something I think about more than I'd like to admit. It's not just diving either - I feel like people these days are always saying the words without actually hearing what's going on underneath. Like when someone asks "how are you" but they're already looking at their phone before you answer. Or when a buddy says they've got your back but you can tell their mind is somewhere else. It's wild how many of us go through the motions of communication without really tuning in to the actual signal. Makes you wonder how much we miss by just going through the checklist without feeling the tone of it all.
