Can we talk about guys who skip the pre-dive comms check on a new tender?
I saw a diver in Pensacola last week almost get dropped because his tender didn't confirm the 'okay' signal before he went under. How many near misses does it take to make a 30-second radio check standard procedure?

That mention of Florida dive masters really lines up. I read an article a few years back about how common these kinds of stories are in the diving community. It seems like every coastal region has its own version of a strange underwater encounter that gets passed around. The details change, but the core idea of seeing something unexpected down there stays the same. It makes you wonder what sorts of things really are hiding in the deep.

Is forgetting a comms check really that big of a deal though? I've seen plenty of dives where the tender and diver just give a thumbs up and go under, and nothing bad happens. @christopherwilliams, that Florida story sounds like it might be getting blown out of proportion. Half the time, these near misses are just people panicking over a minor timing issue, not a real equipment failure.
