For years I swore by a 3/8 inch line for all my salvage rigging. A wreck survey in Mobile Bay last month showed me I was just making my own job harder.

Totally get that. Stubbornly used the same gear for years until a job proved me wrong. Sometimes you just need to see the hard proof to finally change your ways.

Wondering if @leotaylor's point works the other way too. Sometimes you see the proof but your pride still won't let you switch.

The real kicker is when you finally switch and then realize you were handicapping yourself for years out of pure stubbornness. What was the job that proved you wrong? I had a similar wake-up call with a lighting setup that I swore by until a client's deadline forced me to borrow a different kit. The results were night and day, and I felt like an idiot for wasting so much time. Did you end up fully converting to whatever new gear you tried, or do you still keep the old stuff around for personal projects?
