Hit 500 commercial dives last week and it got me thinking about certification numbers vs real experience

I logged my 500th dive on a pipeline inspection job in the Gulf last Tuesday. The company I work for counts everything from training pool hours to actual bottom time, but my mentor says only working dives over 100 feet should count. So which is it, the number on paper or the time spent in real conditions? I started thinking about this because my buddy hit his 500th last month and he's barely done any deep mixed gas work. Has anyone else wrestled with whether those milestones mean something or if they're just a company number?

You sound like you're overthinking a number.
