Just blew $350 on a 'top-rated' dive light from an online ad that flooded after 15 minutes in 40 feet of murk.
Has anyone found a truly reliable brand for low-vis work that won't fail when you need it most?

That murk is a real light killer, 40 feet is nothing to mess with. The big thing a lot of people miss is that "top-rated" online often means for clear water reef diving. For true low vis and silt, you need a light built for the abuse. My dive club swears by UK or Light Monkey for that kind of work, they're built like tanks. The seals and switches are just made different. It's worth checking if your next one has a real warranty for professional use, not just a store return policy.

Disagree completely about needing special gear for low vis. Plenty of divers use cheaper lights in silt and they work fine. You're just paying for a brand name and overbuilt gear.

Hold up, are you sure that's a real 40 foot depth test though? I mean, a lot of those cheap online lights just don't have the o-ring seals for actual pressure at that depth. Even if the water isn't that deep, the pressure change can mess with a poorly sealed switch. Diana's right that the real dive light brands build their stuff different for that sort of work. It's not just about the brand name, it's about the actual design for murky water where you need to not have your light die. You definitely want something with a mechanical switch not a magnetic one for that kind of silt.
