Old surface air vs. studying for mixed gas, which way do you lean?

I ran surface air for 8 years in the Gulf, mostly 100 foot pipeline inspections, and we just did things by feel and hand signals. Now I'm diving trimix out of Seattle for a salvage outfit, and the pre-dive planning feels like a whole different trade. Anyone else switch over and find the math and gas management makes you a safer diver, or do you think the old hands-on approach had its own edge?
