Shoutout to the old timer who showed me knife hand signals on a job

I was working a pipeline inspection off the Gulf coast near Port Fourchon maybe 6 months ago. This guy in his 60s just grabbed my hand underwater and guided me through the signals without saying a word topside. Has anyone else had an older diver take the time to teach you something small like that?

Man that’s cool, older guys like that have so much patience and just quietly pass stuff on. Good on him for taking the time under water like that.

Yeah, totally. There's something about watching a guy who's clearly done it a hundred times just calmly walk someone through it. No ego, no showing off, just "hold it like this, wait for the line to go slack." I remember my uncle teaching me to tie a dropper loop on a windy bank and he never once got annoyed even though I messed it up like five times. Those quiet moments underwater or on the shore are where most people actually learn, not from YouTube videos. And the fact that he's doing it while holding his breath, that's a whole other level of chill.
