Switched from a full face mask to a Kirby Morgan and my comms got way better

I spent my first 18 months diving with a cheap full face mask I got off the internet. Comms were always scratchy and I had to repeat myself on every job. Last month I finally bought a used KM 18 and ran it on a 2 week bridge inspection gig near Seattle. First dive I noticed the difference - crystal clear audio and no more fogging. Has anyone else had a similar jump in performance after upgrading their mask setup?

Fully agreeing with @the_sean on the cracked regs thing, I've heard horror stories from guys who didn't check theirs before jumping in. The audio clarity difference is night and day though, I think the cheap masks just rattle the speaker around too much. Definitely worth the upgrade if you can find one that's been looked after.

Man you gotta be careful with that KM 18, they're great masks but a lot of them floating around used have cracked regs or old exhale valves. The audio clarity boost is real though, I think people don't realize how much of the scratchy comms comes from the cheap masks having bad speaker placement or sealing issues. Just make sure you're cleaning the spit cup every few dives or it'll start leaking on you mid shift, that's a thing everyone learns the hard way lol.
