That old dive tender in Port Fourchon still crosses my mind
Back in 2009 this guy named Earl rigged my bailout bottle in about 10 minutes without a word, just a nod when it was done. He told me the secret was keeping the hoses short and dry, nothing fancy. Anyone else have a tender who taught them more in one job than any course did?

Honestly, I think people romanticize these guys way too much. Earl handed you a bottle that worked, cool, but it's not like he cracked the code of the universe. Half the time those old timers just repeated what they saw someone else do and called it a secret. People take one good day on the water and turn it into some kind of spiritual awakening. If it took you more than a course to figure out short, dry hoses, that's on you.
