That time I learned the hard way about cold water gear failure

Last month I was doing a hull cleaning job down in Norfolk and my drysuit inflator valve froze up solid around 40 feet. I figured I could just muscle through but my buddy Dave signaled me to surface and sure enough the valve was jammed with salt crystals. We spent 45 minutes flushing it with warm water on deck before I could even think about going back down. Has anyone else had their inflator valve seize up in colder water or did I just get a bad batch?

That thing about muscling through is exactly why I stopped trusting expensive gear without checking it first. I've seen the same pattern with everything from car doors to oven knobs, they always lock up when you least expect it. Salt crystals are just a reminder that nothing is built for real world abuse. Five minutes of preventive maintenance saves you an hour of fixing a problem you knew was coming.

Funny you mention salt crystals, my buddy who restores old boats says that's exactly why vintage hardware lasts longer - the corrosion actually bonds threads tighter on brass and bronze, so you can't muscle it at all without snapping something. Stainless steel is the real trap cause it looks invincible but galling seizes it up way faster than plain rust.
