Tried using a welding hood underwater filter for a salvage job in Galveston last month

I was working a salvage job off Galveston last month and got tired of my dive light fogging up in the murk. So I rigged up a welding hood auto-darkening filter behind my faceplate (sort of a dumb idea in hindsight). It worked for about 5 minutes before the saltwater shorted the electronics and I was blind down there for 20 minutes while my buddy had to guide me back to the boat. Has anyone else tried something makeshift that backfired this bad?

Damn that's rough. I tried using zip ties to strap a waterproof flashlight to my snorkel mask once because I thought it'd be like a headlamp. The whole setup came loose after ten minutes and the light sank straight to the bottom of the lake. Spent the rest of the afternoon swimming blind and tripping over rocks.

People always think duct tape and zip ties can fix anything. Used to keep my car's bumper on with bungee cords for two years. Worked great until it didn't.
