A client's "emergency" last Tuesday was that his mouse pad was upside down
Last Tuesday around 4pm I get a call from a regular client, a small law office over on Grant Street, and his voice sounds like the building is on fire. He says his computer is broken, nothing clicks right, he has a filing deadline at 5. I drive over there, walk into his office, and the guy is practically sweating. I sit down, move the mouse once, and everything is fine. Turns out he had flipped his mouse pad upside down the night before while cleaning his desk, and he is convinced the pad has to face a certain way or the mouse stops working. I flipped it back, the pad is just plain black cloth with no logo, and he looked at me like I had done surgery. I still billed him the $65 service call because, well, gas and time. Now I keep a tiny note on my intake form asking if any desk items moved recently. Has anyone else gotten a call that turned out to be a 10 second fix?
Back in 2019 I had a guy at a dental office call me in a full panic because his keyboard "stopped working." I get there, and he had stacked a stack of folders right on top of the wireless receiver plugged into the back of his tower. Moved the folders, keyboard came back to life instantly. He tried to hand me a $20 tip and I just laughed and took the service call fee instead. Ten seconds of work, forty minute round trip. Now I ask every new client if anything got moved or cleaned near their desk lately. Saves us both a headache.
