Client feedback on my invoice format saved me 2 hours a week

A client told me my itemized list was confusing because I mixed hardware costs with labor hours, so I switched to separate sections for parts and time. Now I just copy a template and fill in numbers, and nobody asks for clarification anymore. Any of you use a simple format that works well for residential clients?

Did you separate them into actual columns or just two different sections under the same header? I've been thinking of trying a single-page layout with a simple line separating hardware from labor but not sure if that's clean enough.

I've actually tried both and the single line separator works fine as long as you keep the sections tight. I put hardware on the left and labor on the right with just a thin gray line between them, no bold headers or anything. What really made it click for me was keeping each side to like 5-6 items max so it doesn't get cluttered. Have you thought about using a small indent or bullet style to separate the two instead of a line?
