DAE realize they were stripping screw holes with the wrong driver bit for ages
Last Tuesday I was putting a new SSD in a customer's Dell at my shop in Reno and the tiny screw would not come out, so I leaned on it and rounded the head off. My coworker handed me a JIS bit and it spun out on the first try without any pressure, which is when I found out those cheap Amazon bits I have been using for like 4 years were the problem. How do you all keep track of which driver size fits which laptop without grabbing the wrong one every time?
I used to think bit size didn't matter that much and any Phillips that fit close enough was fine, but a few months back I stripped two screws in a row on a ThinkPad T480 and finally looked it up. Turns out those Japanese laptops use JIS screws and a regular Phillips will cam out and chew the head up, exactly like you said. Now I keep a little index card taped inside my bench with the three sizes I run into most and I check it before I grab anything. Takes two seconds and saves me from wrecking another screw.
