Did I have it backwards on thermal paste application this whole time?

For like 4 years I was doing the pea size method for every single CPU I built. Overwatch 2 kept crashing on my new Ryzen 7600 build last month, and the temps were hitting 95 degrees under load. A buddy watches me build and says "dude, that chipset has a different IHS layout, you need to spread it manually for that one." I always thought spreading was for amateurs. Now I'm wondering how many past builds I cooked early because I just assumed one method fits all. Has anyone else had a moment where you realized your go-to technique was actually hurting performance on certain hardware?

Bro, 95 degrees is hot but are we sure that's a paste problem and not a cooler mount issue or bad airflow? I've seen people slather the stuff on like peanut butter and still get fine temps on Ryzen 7000 chips. I'm just not convinced a few missed spots on the edges are gonna kill your CPU unless you're running some extreme overclock 24/7. How do you even know the paste was the difference and not just reseating the cooler better the second time?

Did you check the mounting pressure yourself when you pulled the cooler off? Too many people just crank down on the thumbscrews and end up with uneven contact that looks fine but isn't. Also, what case and fan setup are you running? If it's a glass box with one exhaust fan, no amount of paste is gonna save you. These chips run hot by design, so anything past 90 needs a closer look at the whole cooling loop before blaming the paste job.
