I thought the "reseat the RAM" advice was a meme until a Gateway desktop from 2003 proved me wrong
For 4 years I rolled my eyes every time a forum thread ended with "just reseat the RAM," because it always sounded like a cop out. Then a customer brought in an old Gateway running XP that would not post, and I had already quoted her $85 for a diagnostic plus whatever parts came up. Pulled both sticks, hit the slots with compressed air, clicked them back in, and it booted straight to the desktop. Now I do it before I even open a ticket, and I want to know how many of you have had a "too simple to work" fix actually pay off like that.
Bro that Gateway just wanted you to pay attention to it one more time before it retired. Honestly the fact that you quoted her $85 and the fix was literally zero dollars is so funny in a painful way. I used to work on old Dells and HPs and yeah, reseating RAM is real tech magic, not a meme. Half the "dead" machines I ever touched just had a dusty stick that walked itself loose over 15 years of vibration. Tbh compressed air and a firm click have saved me more times than any fancy tool. The hard part is admitting to the customer that you charged them for a diagnosis when the answer was "push it back in.
