Serious question, does your shop have a policy on customer data?
I had a guy bring in his laptop last Thursday at my shop in Denver and he basically handed me his whole life - banking info, tax returns, the works - no password set up. I told him he needed to lock that down, but he said he trusts us completely. Do you take responsibility for protecting that kind of stuff or is it on the customer to secure their own files before handing it over?

Oh, man, that's a tough spot to be in... I feel for you. Honestly, if someone hands me their unlocked device with everything on it, I'd want to be extra careful but it's really on them to protect their own stuff first. You did the right thing warning him, but you can't be the security guard for other people's carelessness.

Wait, did you have him sign a waiver? In my shop I made a simple one that says we're not liable for any data on the device, and it's the customer's job to back up or protect their files. I also keep a few cheap USB drives on hand and offer to copy their stuff to it before I start, but it's totally their choice. You did the right thing by warning him, and @the_vera is spot on - it's really on them if they don't lock it down. Just a heads up, one guy had his whole QuickBooks file open on his desktop, tax stuff and all, I closed it and told him to set a password next time. Cover your ass with a little paperwork and you're good.
