Spent $200 on a fancy cable tester that just sits in my toolbox now
I picked up this high end Fluke cable tester last month thinking it would save me time on network jobs. Cost me about $200 from a local electronics shop. First three jobs I used it on it worked great, pinpointed a bad crimp in like 2 minutes. But now I'm back to just using my $20 continuity tester and it does the same thing for 90% of what I do. Has anyone else bought a tool that was way overkill for the actual work you do?

What kinda jobs are you actually doing though? For basic stuff that $20 tester works fine most days. That Fluke is overkill unless you're chasing intermittent faults or doing data center work regularly lol.

Man @wesley_grant33 you're totally right about that $20 tester being fine for most stuff. I was doing a run of basic outlet checks and panel swaps last month and my cheapo meter handled it all no problem. But then I had this ONE job where an old building had phantom voltage issues and I spent HOURS chasing it with my basic tester before I finally borrowed a Fluke from a buddy. That ONE time made me realize the difference, but for 90% of my work I don't need the expensive stuff. It's like having a Ferrari to drive to the grocery store.
