Spent 4 Hours Chasing a Ghost Driver Issue on a Client's PC

Had a Dell Optiplex in yesterday that would randomly blue screen every 45-60 minutes. Replaced RAM, swapped the SSD, ran memtest, checked temps, updated every driver I could find. Finally noticed in event viewer a bunch of errors tied to the network adapter. Turns out a Realtek NIC driver update from Windows Update was the culprit. Rolled it back and it's been solid for 6 hours now. 4 hours of my life gone over a stupid driver. Has anyone else lost a whole afternoon to something this dumb?

Drivers have been the bane of my existence since the Windows 98 days, I swear. Spent an entire Saturday once trying to fix a sound card that turned out to be a bad driver update from three years prior. You think we'd have learned by now but here we are, chasing ghosts in the machine.

Honestly I used to think people were just being dramatic about driver issues until I had the exact same experience you described. Spent a whole weekend debugging why my graphics card was running like garbage on a fresh build. Turned out the driver from the manufacturer's own website was the problem, not the hardware. Rolled back to an older version and boom, everything worked perfect. Makes you wonder how many perfectly good parts got returned to stores because of bad software.
