The one server room that made me check UPS batteries every quarter now

I was working in a basement server room at a small law firm in downtown Portland about two years ago. They had a UPS that was supposedly only two years old but it gave out during a brownout and took down their file server anyway. When I cracked it open, all the batteries were bulging and the date codes showed they were actually five years old. Ever since that day I always double check the manufacture dates even when the sticker says something different.

Three year old batteries bulging like that is actually pretty common. The date codes on the sticker are usually just the assembly date, so if they sat on a shelf for a couple years before install you're already behind.

Totally agree @cora400, I had the same thing happen with a set that was already two years old out of the box.
