Unpopular opinion: chasing the newest driver version on a client's 2015 HP was doing more harm than good

Wasted 3 hours on a Tuesday troubleshooting random USB dropouts on a client's old HP in Bakersfield before I figured out the brand new chipset driver I pushed broke the power settings, so has anyone else learned the hard way to just leave a working machine alone?
