Hot take: the soundboard feed at the Roseland in Portland ruined my phone recordings for good
I was at the Roseland Theater in Portland two months ago and the sound guy let me plug into the board for the whole set. Now every crowd recording I make on my phone sounds like mud compared to that one tape, and I am thinking about bringing my own cable to every show just in case. The other side of this is that a raw phone tape has the room noise and the crowd yelling that the board feed never gets. So which one do you all actually keep, the clean board mix or the messy room tape?
Got a board tape at a small club in Eugene last year and it wrecked me the same way. Now I carry a little Hosa cable and a 1/4 adapter in my bag, and half the sound guys are cool about it, the other half look at me like I asked to fly the plane. Keep both if you can, the board mix for the music and the phone tape for the drunk guy screaming the chorus behind you.
