My buddy swore I should hold my phone sideways at the 9:30 Club, and 6 months of shows say he was right

I used to record every set with my phone upright and the vocals always came out muddy, but he said to flip it landscape and cup my hand over the mic, and the last 4 shows sound way cleaner. Anyone else messing with hand placement, or is there a better fix for the bass rattle in small rooms?
