3 year old driveway pour still has me defending my approach

Poured a 30-yard driveway near Eugene back in June 2021. Did a light broom finish instead of the heavy swirl the HOA wanted. Foreman called it "too plain" and told me to redo it. Three winters later and that plain finish still has zero cracks or spalling. Their fancy swirl jobs are already flaking. Why is everyone so scared of simple broom finishes?

Did the HOA give you any specific reason why they thought plain broom wouldn't hold up, or was it just a looks thing?
