Chose between a wood float and a magnesium float on my last driveway pour in Tulsa
Last month I had a 40 foot driveway pour and my old wood float was starting to warp bad, so I grabbed a magnesium float at the supply yard on Peoria. I figured mag would finish faster since it does not soak up water, but it grabbed way harder on the wet mix and left me with a couple rough spots near the joints. Went back to the wood float for the second half and it floated out way smoother, even if it was slower going. Next time I think I will keep the mag for cooler mornings and wood for hot afternoons when the mud sets quicker. Anyone else switch floats depending on the weather or am I just overthinking it?
Man, I feel you on the mag grabbing. I pour a lot of flatwork here in Oklahoma and had the same thing happen on a hot day, that mag float just stuck and tore up the cream near my expansion joints. I keep a broke-in wood float for the wet stuff and only pull out the mag once the mud stiffens up enough that it won't grab. My rule now is wood first pass while it's still shiny, mag after it sets a bit. Sounds like you already got it figured out better than most guys.
