Heard a guy at the supply yard say broom finishes are for amateurs
I was grabbing bags of Portland at Builders Source in Tulsa yesterday when this older finisher told some kid that broom finishes are what you do when you don't know how to trowel. Made me kinda mad since I do broom work all the time for driveways around here. Anybody else run into gatekeepers like this who think their way is the only way?

Well that just set me back on my heels. I can't believe a grown man would say something that foolish out loud, especially in front of a younger guy trying to learn the trade. Broom finishes have been around longer than any of us have been alive, and they're the standard for driveways and walkways in this part of the country for a reason. Troweling has its place sure, but calling broom work amateur is just plain wrong and disrespectful to a lot of good finishers. Sounds like that old timer's ego wrote a check his skills couldn't cash.

What gets me is that broom finishes actually do a better job preventing slips in wet weather than a lot of troweled stuff, especially around here where we get ice. The old timers always talk about "proper technique" but they forget purpose matters just as much as polish. Is a finish really amateur if it keeps somebody from cracking their head on their own driveway?
