I really think DIY concrete counters are overrated for most people

Last month my neighbor tried to pour his own kitchen countertops using one of those box store kits. Spent around $400 on materials and it cracked within two weeks. I told him to hire a pro but he said it couldn't be that hard. Now he's got a slab in his backyard that looks like a dried out riverbed. Who else has seen these kits fail and what did you end up doing to fix it?
