Old foreman's 2 inch rule finally clicked last month

My first foreman back in 2009 always said to keep your wet concrete at least 2 inches thicker than the blueprint calls for. I thought he was just covering his own backside and wasting material. Last month we poured a patio slab in Boise and the ground had a soft spot we missed with the probe. That extra thickness saved us from a full tear out and repour, probably $1,800 in material and labor. Has anyone else had old timer advice that seemed pointless but turned out to be the difference maker?
