PSA: My new magnesium float cracked clean in half on a driveway job in Spokane last Thursday.

The handle snapped right off at the neck when I put some pressure on it, and I had to finish the last 400 square feet with a backup steel trowel, so has anyone else had this happen with a magnesium float from a certain big box store brand?

Damn, that's rough. So it just snapped clean under normal pressure? I've had the edges chip on cheaper ones before, but a full break at the neck sounds like a serious casting flaw. Were there any bubbles or weird texture in the metal where it broke? Makes me wonder if it was just a bad batch.

Yeah, that "bad batch" thought crossed my mind too. If it snapped clean with no bubbles or weird texture, it might've been a heat treat issue where the neck got too hard and brittle. Best bet is to hit up the manufacturer with a pic of the break, they've usually got a warranty for stuff like this.

Magnesium floats are pretty much disposable tools anyway.
