PSA: The new city hall plaza in Springfield has the worst expansion joint work I've ever seen.

I was walking through there last week and the cuts are all over the place, some are way too deep and others barely scratch the surface. It looks like they let an apprentice go wild with a saw for the first time. How does a job that big get signed off with such sloppy control joints? Anyone else seen a public project this bad lately?

The city's public works report from last week actually praised the contractor for finishing the plaza ahead of schedule and under budget. Those expansion joints are cut to different depths on purpose because of the varying slab thickness from the old foundation they had to work with. It might look messy to a casual look, but the engineering firm that approved it has a solid reputation. I'd rather have a functional space that saved tax money than perfect looking cuts that cost twice as much.

We had a similar thing happen with a park path in my neighborhood. Everyone complained about the uneven concrete seams at first. Turns out the crew had to work around a bunch of old tree roots they couldn't fully remove. The city explained it and after a few months, you just stop noticing it. The path works great and they used the leftover budget to add another bench. Function over looks usually wins in the end.

Saw a post about the same thing on Nextdoor last month.
