Overheard a partner at the firm say discovery is just billable padding
He was telling a first year that half the document requests are just to run up hours, and I wondered if my last motion for sanctions was actually about the evidence or just me being pissed they wasted my weekend.

Half those document requests probably are padding, but honestly, who hasn't wasted a weekend on a motion that felt personal? I mean, I remember a case where my partner made us redepose a witness over something that was clearly in the initial production, and it was just billable theater. The sanctions thing though, that's a different animal - usually you file those when you're genuinely pissed off AND there's actual bad behavior, even if the line gets blurry. Nobody's losing sleep over discovery being a revenue stream, but pretending every motion is some noble pursuit of justice? Come on, we're all billing for the same six hours, just with different labels.

Man, you just described like half the legal profession right there lol. It's all just different flavors of billing with a side of ego.
