Question about hiring a cheap expert witness for a contract dispute

Paid $2,500 for a guy who got torn apart in a deposition, basically costing us the case. Anyone know a good way to vet these people besides just checking their listed credentials?

Oof, that's brutal. Honestly, the listed credentials are just the starting point. You gotta dig into their actual court history. Ask for examples of past depositions or trial testimony, not just their resume. A cheap expert often means they don't do this often, and that shows under pressure. I'd call the lawyers who hired them before and ask how they held up.

Wow, that's a nightmare! @nora535 has a great point about checking their real court history. What kind of questions do you even ask the lawyers who used them before?

okay but honestly is it really that deep? i mean yeah getting a bad expert sucks but unless you're on a million dollar case it's probably not gonna tank your whole thing. half the time you can prep them enough to get through a basic deposition without them completely falling apart. i'd rather spend my time picking out a good expert for the big stuff and just wing it with whoever on the small stuff. the whole "calling past lawyers" thing sounds like overkill unless you're dealing with some super specific niche area.
