Senior partner told me my deposition prep was too gentle. Changed everything.

I used to prep witnesses by being really nice about it. Figured I didn't want to stress them out before the real deal. Then a senior partner watched one of my sessions and said I was doing them a disservice. She told me: "You're not preparing them for the other side, you're preparing them for a coffee date." So I started mixing in some of the tougher questions I knew opposing counsel would ask. First time I tried it with a client in Houston, they actually thanked me after. Has anyone else had to completely rework how you handle witness prep?
