Wasted $15k on a merger due diligence report from a no-name consultant

I hired a guy named Tom from some firm in Delaware to do due diligence on a small acquisition target last fall. He missed a $3 million pending lawsuit against the target, and we almost closed the deal before my own lawyer caught it. Has anyone else been burned by hiring cheap outside contractors for corporate litigation prep work?
