Client wants a balayage fix next Tuesday after a box dye mishap, and I'm not sure I should take it
A gal called my salon in Boise three days ago in tears because she used a box color on her roots and now has a two inch orange band above her highlights. She booked a consult for next Tuesday and I told her I'd look at it, but I've never tried lifting box dye out of a balayage before and I'm worried about frying her hair. Do I turn it down and refer her to a colorist who does corrections, or is there a way to test strand first and still take the job?
Oh man I feel this one. I heard a stylist talk about this on a podcast, she said box dye is the worst because you have no clue what developer strength or what kind of direct dye is sitting in there. She said the orange band usually means the color lifted too hot and then grabbed weird, so it may not even be a simple lightening job. Strand test is a must for sure, but even that only tells you so much about how the mid lengths will take it. If you have never done a correction on box dye before I would refer her out and not feel bad about it, one bad band is way easier to fix than a whole head of melted hair. Maybe offer to do her cut or a gloss after someone else fixes the color so you still keep the client.
