Had a client last fall who taught me about color matching

I was working on a root touch up for a woman in her 60s at my chair in Portland, and she noticed I was rushing through the consultation. She stopped me and said, 'Honey, you're not painting a fence, you're painting a portrait.' That comment made me slow down and really look at her natural highlights. How do you handle clients who seem impatient with your process?

oh wait, she actually said that to you? that is wild lmao. i mean i get wanting to just get in and get done but that is a straight up life lesson right there. like damn, you're not painting a fence. that's deep for a client to drop on you mid appointment. i bet it stuck with you too because honestly that's the kind of comment that rewires your whole brain on the spot. how do you even react to that without just nodding and saying "okay grandma you're right" lol

Honestly @ninasanchez hit the nail on the head. Used to think doing things fast was the whole point, like speed equals good service or whatever. But that line about not painting a fence really stuck with me and flipped my whole view. Realized I was treating clients like tasks, not people, and that's not the same thing at all. Now I slow down on purpose even when my brain is screaming "hurry up." Tbh her saying that is probably why I still remember her face years later.
