Had a client tell me my blending technique looked "choppy" last Tuesday

I was doing a shadow root on a regular at my chair in Phoenix and she straight up said the line between the dark and light was pretty rough. Turned out I was pulling my color through too fast with the comb. I slowed way down and started using smaller sections and the blend looked way smoother. Anyone else get feedback like that that made you tweak your approach?

Heard a stylist on a podcast talking about how the angle of your comb makes a big difference in how the color lays. They said if you hold it too flat, the product just sits on top instead of blending down into the hair. Slowing down really is the key though... I used to rush through root smudges and they'd look all patchy until a buddy pointed out I was moving like I was in a race. Smaller sections helped me too, but also just taking a breath between each row. That little pause lets you see what you're actually doing instead of going on autopilot.

Man, are we really overthinking comb angles that much? I get that technique matters, but I've seen people nail root smudges with a rattail comb held however they want. Feels like another thing to stress about when the real issue is usually just patience and product choice.
