Rant: the no-tipping salon in Seattle made me rethink everything I charge
I was up in Seattle two weeks ago visiting my sister and she booked us both blowouts at this salon in Ballard that doesn't take tips. Sign on the wall said it plain: prices are higher, gratuity is built in, don't hand us cash. The cut and style ran $95 and it was a good blowout, nothing magic. Here's what got me though. My sister has been going there for 8 months and she's never once felt weird about the price, and the stylist told me she actually takes home more now than she did at her old commission salon. Back home I'm charging $45 for a cut plus whatever walks out the door in tips, and some days that's great and some days it's $6. So now I'm stuck on it. Is the built-in price model better for us as stylists and I've just been too scared to raise my prices to find out, or does it kill the whole reason clients love us, which is that little personal moment at the end? If your salon went no-tip tomorrow, would you stay or would you walk?
