Still swear by the old hair pin curl trick for natural looking volume

I was doing a wedding updo last Saturday for a bride with super fine hair and my teasing comb just wasn't holding. Tried my usual backcombing routine and it flopped after 20 minutes. Pulled out some old school pin curls from my kit, set them with a bit of strong hold gel, and let them dry under a hood dryer for 30 minutes. The volume lasted through the whole reception even with her dancing. Has anyone else gone back to an old technique after a new product let you down?

I feel you on that teasing comb letting you down. The hair pin curl trick saved me at a quinceañera last month when my usual volumizing spray made a girl's hair stiff and crunchy. I used small pin curls with a cream light hold instead of gel, let them set with a warm blow dryer for 15 minutes, and the lift looked natural but held up through three outfit changes. Sometimes the old ways handle humidity and movement way better than the new gimmicks.

The cream vs gel thing makes such a difference in how the hair feels after, too much gel and you get that helmet look. Those small pin curls with a warm dryer seem to lock in the shape without the crunch, which is perfect for events where they're gonna be moving around a lot. Idk why we ever strayed from the methods that actually work under pressure.
