Tried a $40 shears sharpening service versus the mall kiosk guy for $12.

The pro service gave me back tools that cut like new, the kiosk left nicks in my favorite pair. Anyone know a reliable sharpener in the Cleveland area?

Used to always go for the cheap option myself, figured a sharp edge was a sharp edge. This exact thing happened with my kitchen knives last year, totally ruined a good blade. reese_bell is right about the buy once thing, it really applies here. You're not just paying for the sharpening, you're paying for the skill to not wreck your stuff. Found a great local guy after my cheapo disaster, worth every extra penny.

Oh, that's a good point about the skill part. I've been debating whether to try learning to sharpen my own knives or keep paying someone else, what made you decide to go the professional route instead of learning yourself? I keep hearing conflicting advice about the learning curve and whether it's worth the initial investment in good stones.

It's the classic "buy once, cry once" rule showing up for haircuts now.
