Watched a new stylist foil a full head in 45 minutes and I just stood there feeling old
Back when I got my license in 2009 at the Aveda Institute in Minneapolis, a full foil took me close to three hours and my hands were shaking by the end. Last Tuesday this girl Kayla, who has been on the floor maybe four months, knocked one out in 45 minutes flat using a comb and a weird little folding technique she picked up from a YouTube channel. I asked her where she learned it and she just shrugged and said it was free online. Am I the only one who feels like the trade moved on without me, or did anyone else have a moment like this?
Sounds like she just found a faster way to do the same job, not some huge shift in the trade. A comb and a folding trick from YouTube is cool and all, but 45 minutes on a full foil makes me wonder what corners got cut or how the color actually lifted. Speed comes with reps, and she's got maybe four months of real heads under her belt. Give it a year and see if her work still looks right, because fast and good are two different things.
